Battlemaidens

The Battlemaidens of Echoe are an elite prestige class unique to the Church of Echoe. They handle the adventure-some quests that the regular paladins and clerics might otherwise ignore. Not only do they do this to serve the church’s immediate needs, but to spread the word of Echoe everywhere. It is due to their hawkishness that many see the Church of Echoe as militant or imperialistic. This insistence to fight and spread the teachings is in part due to their idolization of Saint Alice (seen most obviously in their choice of dress) and in part due to their desire to prove a woman’s worth in combat as being equal to or greater than a man’s. If there is any cause they will champion outside of the church’s, it is the treatment and opportunity of women. Many Battlemaidens become leaders in the church or in the military and most often the Selene comes from their ranks. They are trained to be diplomatic, but naturally suspicious. To compensate for their deficiency in magic, many of them train to use magical items as paladins or clerics might.

Most Battlemaidens come from backgrounds as fighters or paladins, though clerics are sometimes drawn in as well. Once in a while there might be a monk, bard, or barbarian but never anything else. Despite being in the same church, Battlemaidens despise Nightmare Spinners and will never work with them without a direct order from a superior such as the Selene or an Oneiroi.

Weapon and Armor Proficiency: Battlemaidens are proficient with all simple and martial weapons, all types of armor, and with shields (except tower shields).

Aura of Good (Ex): The power of a Battlemaiden’s aura of good is equal to her Battlemaiden level. If she has an aura of good from another class, the levels from that class stack with the Battlemaiden levels to determine the power of the aura of good.

Weapon Specialization (Ex): A Battlemaiden gains the Weapon Specialization as a bonus feat in either the longsword or rapier, whichever she chose for entry into this class, even if she does not meet the requirements of the feat.

Bonus Feat: At levels 2, 6, and 10 a Battlemaiden may choose a bonus feat from the Fighter Bonus Feats. If the feat requires a fighter level, use the Battlemaiden’s level instead. If a Battlemaiden has Fighter levels, they stack with Battlemaiden levels for this purpose.

Divine Grace (Su): A Battlemaiden gains a bonus equal to her charisma bonus (if any) on all saving throws. If a Battlemaiden already had Divine Grace from another class, she gains a +1 bonus to her saving throws instead.

Deep Slumber (Sp): A Battlemaiden may use deep slumber as a spell-like ability a number of times equal to her charisma modifier (if any). Her caster level is equal to half her character level. The save DC is Charisma based.

Detect Evil (Sp): A Battlemaiden may use detect evil at will as a spell-like ability. Her caster level is equal to her Battlemaiden level (plus any levels from any other class that also grants this ability).

Smite Evil (Su): A Battlemaiden may smite evil as a paladin once per day. If she already has smite evil attempts from another class, increase her daily smite attempts by one. At level 9 the Battlemaiden gains another smite attempt. A Battlemaiden’s smite also works on dreams, but not on Dreamless, though in all other ways it functions as a paladin’s.

Divine Health (Su): A Battlemaiden is immune to all diseases, including supernatural and magical diseases.

Dream (Sp): A Battlemaiden may use dream as a spell-like ability once per day. Her caster level is equal to half her character level. The save DC is Charisma based.
